Ebike Usage Laws Compliance

At Ridewave Bikes, rider safety and compliance with Australian e-bike regulations are a top priority. Our e-bikes are designed with flexible settings so they can meet NSW Electrically Power-Assisted Cycle (EPAC) requirements at the point of sale, and can also be restricted further where state laws demand stricter limits. Because legislation can vary between states, we recommend all customers familiarise themselves with their local road rules before riding on public roads.

Below we’ve outlined the key compliance points that apply to our e-bikes:

Key Compliance Features

  • Motor Power
The maximum continuous rated motor power for our bikes is 500 watts. This allows a balance between performance and compliance, ensuring the bike has enough power for safe riding while still aligning with regulatory standards.
  • Speed Limiting for Public Roads
For public road use, our bikes are configured so that power assistance is restricted to speeds of 25 km/h or less. This is a legal requirement under EPAC and ensures the e-bike operates safely in line with Australian road regulations.
  • Progressive Motor Assistance
Motor output reduces progressively as your speed increases, cutting out entirely once you reach 25 km/h or when pedalling stops above 6 km/h. This design ensures smooth assistance and compliance with EPAC standards, preventing uncontrolled surges of power.
  • Throttle Usage
Throttles are supplied for private property and off-road use only. On public roads, throttles must be isolated or removed. If you intend to use your e-bike exclusively off-road, the throttle can remain active.
  • Adaptability for Different States
In some states outside of NSW, the allowable continuous rated motor power is capped at 250W. In these cases, the maximum speed can also be adjusted to 20 km/h for compliance. This ensures our bikes can be configured to suit stricter regional regulations where required.

Important Notes

  • Compliance requirements can differ between states and territories. It is the rider’s responsibility to ensure their e-bike is set up in accordance with the laws that apply in their location.
  • Before using your e-bike on public roads, always check the relevant state legislation and confirm that your settings meet local requirements.
  • For riders who intend to primarily use their e-bike on private property or off-road, our higher-powered configurations can remain active, provided the bike is not operated on public roads in those modes.
